Accounts

Reading a mosque’s accounts before a masjid donation

Most mosques in England and Wales are charities, so their accounts are a search away.

A mosque’s accounts, in short

Its summary on the register shows whether it files on time, and what it takes in and spends. Look over several years.

You can give sadaqah jariyah for a loved one, in their name. See the top 10 Muslim charities in the UK by DonateOpenly’s score.

Reading the register before a masjid donation

  1. Search the mosque on the Charity Commission register and check the number matches.
  2. Check the filing: accounts marked late are worth a question.
  3. Compare income and spending across five years.
  4. Open the full accounts, filed by charities with income over £25,000 (GOV.UK).
  5. See who the trustees are, and how many.

What the numbers can tell you

Reserves

Money kept back for repairs or a quiet month. A clear reserves policy is a good sign.

Restricted funds

Gifts given for one purpose, such as the madrasah, kept for it.
